this neighborhood

Aerial photographs of Hartwell are easily identified. When viewed from above, the neighborhood has a distinctive wagon wheel appearance. At the wheel's core is the "Circle of Churches," religious institutions representing several denominations boasting large congregations within the community. Extending beyond the circle in every direction are its spokes, quiet residential streets lined with stately, Victorian manors. An active business district is also located within the neighborhood's borders.

The First Baptist Church of Hartwell was the first "established" place of worship in Cincinnati for the city's rapidly growing African-American population. Parishioners dug a hole in the earth, creating a foundation with rocks pulled from the city's canal. In this open-air basement, worshippers would meet for services led by circuit preachers who arrived from neighboring communities by horse and buggy. A group of cottage homes dating from that period remains occupied in many cases by descendants of those first parishioners.

5,200 citizens of Cincinnati reside in the 1.3 square miles of Hartwell.
